LOOK, MA! NO ENGINE!

The Mustang and I took a huge step this weekend. After taking a great deal of time, for various reasons, I was able to get the old engine out of the Mustang. (NOTE: all pics on this post come courtesy of The Super Hotness.

Here I am, initially getting the process going with the engine crane. (Obviously, I'm using the Dark Side of the Force, as evidenced by my glowing red eyes, gritted teeth, and raised empty hand. Emperor Palpatine himself couldn't have done it better.) I'm pulling the engine out sideways, rather than straight out the front as would usually be done, because I didn't want to have to run the crane around the outside of the garage. It was raining, there are lots of expansion cracks and a lip on the front of the garage floor, and the driveway slopes away from the garage. The last thing I need is 200+ pounds of engine and crane running away out into the street.

Here it is out of the car, resting on the old tire that I keep around just for occasions such as this. Note the pristine clutch pressure plate and flywheel (as well as the incredibly clean bell housing, clutch bearing and fork, and transmission in the engine bay pic at the top of the post) from last summer's big job, the transmission and clutch replacement that lead to the discovery of the screwed-up engine internals that necessitated pulling the engine to begin with. Also note the green glow of coolant still in the water jackets...I've been able to drain the oil but not the remaining coolant. That comes as soon as I get it on the engine stand.

Here's a close-up of the beautiful pressure plate and flywheel, looking rather forlorn to have been just sitting on the back of this old-and-busted engine, doing nothing for so long. One day, it WILL actually be used for what it was purchased for. It's still just going to take some more time and money to get there.]

On a humorous note, did you know that Chick-Fil-A drink holders also perform excellently as used-piston storage units?

VICTORY! Next, the machine shop for the new block, and parts to finish the build. More pics will be forthcoming, I guarantee it!!
