Everyone has to quit, eventually. Some people, like Michael Jackson or James Dean or John F. Kennedy, quit prematurely thanks to the cruelty of nature. Others, like Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Heath Ledger, or John Belushi, force themselves out early as a side-effect of what their art brings them. When it comes to celebrity, it isn't often you get to enjoy all of a full life and wonderful career of fan adulation...and just retire.
So it is with sweet sadness that I heard today that Leonard Nimoy is doing just that. He IS 79, after all, so working well past retirement has suited him well. Maybe he'll finally get to just putter around at home and play golf all day. As he so often told us to do, may he live long and prosper.
