I come, with great satisfaction, to the end of another long week. The amount I've had to do this week is what has put my posts on brief hiatus. I know there are a few of you out there reading this thing (I don't know who all you are, but nonetheless, you're out there and looking for posts). Well, my counter goes up every time I look, so I know SOMEONE is coming to check me out.
In any case, as I said, it's been quite a long week. My last post was Monday afternoon, and now here it is Friday. As much as I enjoy writing on this thing, I've had quite enough to keep me away, thank you very much.
Work has been incredibly busy the last few weeks, really since I got back from RSA. I was able to find a great deal of rejuvenation at that conference, and the vendors I made contact with have all come calling. That has increased my pile of stuff to do. Also, the many great speakers, seminars, and ideas I got there have also increased my workload in the way that only those sorts of things can. You know how it is; you go somewhere and hear someone with more experience than you say something you hadn't thought about before, or opened up a new area of research you've never seen. It sparks something in you, so you decide that it needs to go on The List. You know The List, the official listing, either mental or physical, of all the things we need to do in our lives. So I added about 30 things to The List. Once things get on The List, they rarely get off until they get done.
Tuesday night I had home church. My church has set up small groups for Bible study at the homes of various parishioners, and we call them "home churches". Mine happens to be Tuesday, a fact that saddens me, as next week I begin teaching again, so I won't be able to attend home church much. Anyway, we had a wonderful bunch of discussions, not only on the text we were assigned, but several other things related to our faith and our church and the issues it's facing right now (and anyone who's been reading me regularly knows the issues I mean). It was a truly wonderful evening. We started at 7 and didn't finish until about 9:30.
Wednesday night I had a security seminar to attend down in south Denver. The seminar ran from 5 until nearly 10. I then had to rush to make a network downtime window in north Denver. For those of you who don't know, driving between north Denver and south Denver, just about any time of the day or night, can be a terribly unpleasant experience, and getting from south Denver to north Denver for my downtime was no different. Denver is in the middle of a HUGE highway improvement project known as T-Rex. And that night, T-Rex had closed one of the areas of the highway that I needed to get to my company's facility for the downtime. Then, once I had successfully navigated around that little obstacle, I ran out of gas. I was fortunate in that I ran out of gas right next to some construction trucks, and most construction trucks carry extra gas with them. So they were able to give me enough gas in about 5 minutes to get me to a gas station. I was late, but I was able to make the downtime window. However, I was up until nearly 1 am.
Last night was also a hectic one. I had ANOTHER downtime window scheduled for 9 pm(for maintenance work on a completely different project), and I also had the kids for dinner. And Connor had kung fu from 6-7 pm. So I had to leave work a little early, get to my apartment, make dinner and put it away to warm up after Connor's kung fu class, pick up the kids, get Connor to his class, mess around with Katie for an hour (we went clothes shopping at Kohl's, and had a lot of fun), pick up Connor after class, get back to the apartment, warm up the food, eat it, and get them back to the house around 8 pm, so that I could drive to the facility for the downtime and do the necessary prep work for the 9 pm opening of the downtime window. Then, I was at the facility working on the downtime and the clean-up afterwards until 11 pm.
So to make a long story short (everyone: "TOO LATE!!!"), it's been a long and tiring week. I'm ready for this weekend, and some more quality time with the kids. I'm a bit tight on cash this pay period, but I think I'll have enough to take them swimming at the city rec center's indoor pool.
Thanks to all for reading, and I hope your weekend is as relaxing as I hope mine will be. :-)
