Swing the bat. That's it. Swing the bat, and you have a chance to hit the ball. You'll make some contact, and when you make some contact, you're going to get some hits. You'll also get some fouls, so you'll get to see more pitches, and the more pitches you see, the better your chance of getting a hit. Sure, you might still strike out when you're looking to swing away, but at least you gave it a good try. In short, swing the bat, and good things will usually start to happen.
Stand in the box with the bat on your shoulder, looking for a walk, and you're much more likely to strike out. You're never going to hit the ball if you don't take the bat off your shoulder. You may as well not even step up to the plate.
(Let's talk about that...we have an expression "step up to the plate," meaning to get your chance to take action, to do something great, to come through in the clutch. Notice the inherent aggressiveness in what's implied there? The idea that you're stepping up to the plate TO SWING THE BAT, so you can hit that game-winning grand slam?)
Oh, and don't get mad at the umpire when your boys aren't swinging the bat, and subsequently strike out with regularity.
