Fighting Through It

Today's Chuck Norris Fact:

The Sherman tank was originally called the Norris tank until Chuck Norris decided it wasn't tough enough to be associated with him. The Army, for fear of Chuck Norris, renamed the tank and promised to develop a weapon more fitting of his name. To date, no weapon created has been badass enough to be named after Chuck Norris.

For those who said the Sooners were done, they gave the big FU to all of those folks with a convincing win over Missouri this weekend. I talked a couple of posts back about the importance of getting breaks. OU got nearly all of them in this game. BUT, the bigger thing I noticed was that when their backs were against the wall, they stepped up and took care of business. That goal-line stand, with Missouri starting 1st and goal from the Sooner 2, was the real back-breaker. No breaks needed there; OU held that line on their own.

There's an important lesson there. Through all the pain of the last few seasons, God reveals His purposes and His lessons in unusual ways, and I think I'm finally starting to get it.

The last few weeks have been a set of lessons in perspective. My next post, I guarantee, will be a detailed description of the biggest of those. There have been others, though...for example, last night Heidi and I watched
Click. If you haven't seen it, it's about a nice guy under a lot of pressure and struggling to keep everything in balance. He ends up sacrificing his family and personal life to get ahead, believing that once he gets ahead, things will be OK and he can make it up to everyone later. He blows his entire life chasing the wrong parts of it. There were certainly parts of Adam Sandler's character that I saw in myself and in my current life situation.

Two huge bright spots for me continue to be Heidi's pregnancy, and my great relationship with Heidi. We have rough spots like everyone from time to time. I mean, c'mon, we've only been together a couple of years and we've only been married for a few months, so we're still figuring out all the nuances of each other. But when I'm feeling down, when the hard times come, when things seem like they can't get any worse, I want Heidi by my side.

We're feeling the baby moving more, and the Big Discovery is coming soon. We should know the answer by Thanksgiving. We're working on names still. We have the boy name "98%" set, according to Heidi. The girl name is still something of a work in progress...we thought we had something, but Heidi was not satisfied with it and has been exploring other options. Oh, by the way, if you're bored, check out this cool site, the Baby Names Wizard Name Voyager (Java required to view).

Heidi has found an amazing number of sites dedicated to babies, pregnancy, names, just about anything and everything baby-related. She posts regularly to an online discussion board where she can ask questions and get feedback on just about anything. She has posted some pretty private questions and concerns, but she likes having all of these folks she can celebrate and commiserate with. The funny part to me is all the abbreviations and jargon they use. For example, when she posts, I'm now the "DH," for Dear Husband. Sex is called "BD," for Baby Dance...that's my favorite.

A few things that I can't wait to be over (in no particular order):

1. Any OU loss.
2. Halloween...every year. How boring must a person's life be, to spend so much time and energy celebrating death, fear, and evil? Isn't there enough of that in daily life? Poverty, rape, murder, domestic violence, physical abuse and sexual exploitation of children, and war don't give you what you need?
3. Any horror movie. See the above comments.
4. Any election period. The fog of mingled BS and negativity, worsened by the media's blatant campaigning for the liberals/Democrats, make this biannual event only slightly better than getting run over by a train but still worse than being repeatedly hit in the head with a hammer...oh wait, it's actually the same thing.
5. Any snowstorm here in Denver. I don't want to drive in it, I don't want to shovel it, I don't want to go out in it at all. God has devised much better ways to water the Earth, and I much prefer those methods.

Now, a few things I'm looking forward to (again, in no particular order):

1. The Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years holiday trilogy. Even though the decorations start going up earlier and earlier, civilization is like it's supposed to be in the two months starting with November 1 and culminating with the first week of January. People are nice to one another, the pace of life slows down a bit, lots of celebrating and gift-giving and feasting...does it get any better? I'm convinced that God smiles a little more brightly on the Earth, to make up for the cold and the shorter days, and especially as He prepares for His Son's birthday party (I bet THAT'S a doozy of a party, eh?).
2. Sleeping. I'm not going to lie...being busier and doing more and the additional load of stress has made me much more tired than usual lately, and I look forward to hitting the sack every night like I didn't before.
3. The baby's birthday. If you have any of your own, you already know what I'm talking about. To those of you who don't have any yet, I hope one day you discover this wonderful joy and anticipation.
4. Next football season. I know, I know...we're still in the middle of one. And OU is doing pretty well, all things considered. But next year, with all the returning experience OU has, as long as they get a quarterback who can just run the offense, they should do really well.

Thanks for reading along.
