Thoughts of home

Ah, Twister...watching this movie always makes me pine for home. (My favorite scene is where Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt drive through the house that has been rolled into their path, and Bill Paxton says, "I think we should get off this road.") The music isn't too bad, either.

One of the things I REALLY miss about Oklahoma is the weather. Give me a good ol' Oklahoma thunderstorm any day, and THAT is a good day. Tornadoes aren't so bad, either, once you get used to them. Tornadoes are mostly localized, and the path of destruction they create, while erratic, is usually relatively small. Give me a tornado any day over a hurricane or earthquake or blizzard. That leads nicely to the beginning of my list of reasons why Oklahoma is better than Colorado (sorry, Heidi).

Reason #1: Weathermen in Oklahoma can actually predict the weather with some degree of reliability.

In Oklahoma, weathermen give you a 7-day forecast, and it's good for seven days. In fact, many TV weathermen have a guarantee, where they pony up money for charity if they miss the predicted high by 1-2 degrees either way. Here in Colorado, the weathermen give you a 4-5 day forecast, but it's really not worth anything beyond about 36-48 hours. Even then, you're lucky if they're right. C'mon, Denver people...how many times have we heard, "Well, we shouldn't get a flake of snow for several days", only to wake up the next morning to 6 inches of snow? Yeah, yeah, I know; the mountains break up the weather and make it very difficult to predict. I've heard all the excuses of the Colorado apologists (no, the "300 days of sun per year" argument doesn't hold water with me, either...we'll get into that one another time).

As with everything, it really comes down to how much you value what Colorado has to offer, vs. how much unpleasantness you're willing to deal with to live in Colorado. After 8 1/2 years here, I know now that I don't value most of what Colorado has to offer highly enough to put up with the extra crap associated with it. As the Reason List goes on, you'll see a great deal of my thinking regarding why, unlike most Colorado residents, I DON'T believe that Colorado is The Greatest Place on Earth.

I agree that Colorado may not be the greatest place on Earth, but if this is all you know,or you grew up here- then this seems to be just an alright place to live...our moderate weather can catch some off guard, but for the most part its mild. In additon to that who can argue that we have some nice mountians that are great for climbing, some really nice places to camp, and one of the cleanest capitals in the nation. Not all states can lay that claim, if you give us a chance, we are a really nice place to live, maybe not the BEST, but certainly not one of the worst......
