Yesterday was the Super Bowl. Ho hum. I watched a little and was completely underwhelmed, both by the game and by the ads. After the wild excesses of the dot-com boom years and their aftermath, we appear to be back to mediocrity in the Super Bowl. As to football, two teams no one really cared about from two mid-tier American cities played. Big deal. I'm betting that, as bad as the officiating was (from everyone's discussions today, anyway), if two top-tier cities had played, say, New York and Chicago, I'll bet the furor would be much louder. Well, anyway, who really cares? Bring on August and the 2006 college football season.

Sometimes my geekiness really frightens me. I found a CD that's chock full of really useful tools for handling problems with most types of systems. Going through it and seeing what's in it, I'm almost embarrassed how excited it makes me.

Much as was the case with Titanic, a movie is being hugely hyped for Best Picture, and I have absolutely NO desire to see it. I'm talking, of course, about Brokeback Mountain. The whole "gay cowboy" thing aside, I doubt I would've been very interested in seeing it, even if the plot centered around something other than gay cowboys. It's just not my kind of story. I loved Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and its blending of the excellent martial arts action with a really good storyline, but there isn't much of anything that will convince me to go see his latest work. Heidi's talked to me about it a great deal; she went to see it and really enjoyed it. It DOES appear to have struck a nerve with more than a few people, though; I'm sure many of you have heard about how the Wyoming State Tourism Office has been deluged with calls about where Brokeback Mountain is and how they can visit the actual place.

Last week's Blackmal/Kama Sutra worm scare was a bust. Much like Y2K, I bet this was as much a result of warning and preparation as anything else. Sometimes, people actually do listen, and that's a good thing.

OU did really well in this year's recruiting, signing some top prospects as well as filling some critical holes, most notably on the offensive line. Let's hope that this year's class doesn't turn out like the classes of 2003 and 2004; there were far more busts than booms from those classes, and it made OU very, very thin this year as a result.
