The What Cup? And Other Musings

Today's Chuck Norris Fact:

When Chuck Norris talks, everybody listens. And dies.

-------------------------------------------------------

World Cup??? Who cares? The American team played today, and thoughtfully showed the rest of America how little interest we should all have. Our American team was ranked 5th in the world (yes, you heard that right) heading in to the World Cup. Nike's usual hype machine cranked into high gear, with that "It's a whole new ballgame" commercials. There was even talk that the Americans could possibly make the semifinals or even...(gasp!)...THE FINALS!! Some thought we might even win.

Then we actually played. And got thumped 3-0 (that's "three-nil" to you non-soccer types). 3-0, in a sport where scoreless ties are a regular occurrence (I saw at least one happened over the weekend, with Trinidad & Tobago getting the 0-0 draw against Sweden, and this was considered
an upset.). 3-0, in a sport where 1-0 is a very common score at this level. Now, I don't usually watch soccer, and I didn't get to see today's match, as I was working. Apparently, it really was the fiasco I've read it was. (Read here for the story.)

Oh well....we all know that there's really only one "football" worth paying any attention to. Besides, since when have we needed some sort of acknowledgment or acceptance from the rest of the world? I think we're doing just fine without pretending to care about soccer.

ONLY 83 DAYS UNTIL OU'S SEASON OPENER!!! BOOMER SOONER!!!!

-------------------------------------------------------

I thought a lot lately about some of my favorite sites on the Internet. I'm going to list a few of them here, and add more some other time. Just click the links to go there yourself and see what they're all about. Perhaps you'll enjoy them as much as I do.

1. Heidi's Blog (theinnerpeaceofheidi.blogspot.com) -- How could this page be anywhere else? She's the love of my life, and I love reading anything she writes.

2. Chuck Norris Facts (www.chucknorrisfacts.com) -- this is the place I get our daily Chuck Norris Facts from. If you've never gone, go check it out. They really are hilarious, and they're all about a fellow Oklahoma native (all the way from Ryan, Oklahoma, population 858..........How-DEEEEEEEE!!)

3. College Football News (www.collegefootballnews.com) -- sponsored by Fox Sports, this site has quickly supplanted ESPN as the best site for college football coverage, in my opinion. ESPN still has great analysts, but too much of their coverage is going into the Insider area, and I'm getting tired of how they run their agendas. CFN has the same quality analysts, who have excellent insights into all parts of the college game and, frankly, do a much better job at keeping their opinions honest, even, and unhyped. They'll call anyone out, and they'll give credit where credit is due. And they LOVE college football. If you love it, too, check these folks out.

4. DiscoWeb (www.discoweb.org) -- you might not be a Land Rover enthusiast like me, but if you own a Discovery, this site is a MUST-BOOKMARK. Tech info on new and used Rovers of all makes and models, as well as some cool info on road and trail upgrades and even videos of trails and trips.

4A. The Enthusiast's Range Rover Site (www.rangerovers.net) -- This site is close behind DiscoWeb, because it's a little different and covers a different model. Fortunately for me, the 4.0L fuel-injected V8 in my Disco is identical to the one used in the 4.0L models of the Range Rover in 1998. So I can find relevant repair and maintenance info here as well. Plus, this site is better for parts sources.

5. 14ers.com (www.14ers.com) -- do you really need to ask what's covered on this site? For those of you who are not long-time readers (or don't know me very well), a 14er is a mountain whose summit is over 14,000 feet. Colorado has the most of these in the entire US, with 54 commonly-recognized 14ers (and some lists have up to 58, though 54 is considered the "official" number). I have climbed 8 of these glorious and challenging peaks: Longs, Grays, Torreys, Quandary, Yale, Democrat, Lincoln, and Bross. I plan to keep climbing them as long as my body holds up. This site is a great resource for route information, trip reports, weather, conditions, tips and tricks on trails, maps (even 3D topo), and other great information on Colorado's 14ers.

6. Slashdot (www.slashdot.org) -- If you're a geek like me, this site is indispensible. I can't stand the politics, as most techno-geeks seem to be pretty liberal, and many of the site's visitors are international and enjoy nothing better than ripping the USA. But the news and info on this site are great if you like computers, technologys, or science of any kind.

7. Sooner Sports (www.soonersports.com) -- the official site for University of Oklahoma athletics. Schedules, news, and other info on all OU sports. If you subscribe to the O-Zone option, you get online highlights for all OU sports, and you even get video of games from the current season and past seasons, in their entirety, complete with Bob Barry's radio call synced with the plays. If you love OU football (or any OU sports), this site is a must.

That's a good start. More sites another time. Hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for reading along.
